Observation Narrative
A mixed Pinus pungens and P. rigida open woodland on a steep slope with trees stunted to just over 6 m. with a heath dominated shrub layer which is mixed with Quercus ilicifolia. The substrate is a fairly deep white sand. An unusual feature of this woodland is the abundant Xerophyllum asphodeloides (several bloomed this year). There is some coppice growth on Quercus montana and Nyssa sylvatica. The pines appear to be from several cohorts, ranging in size from 8-28 cm. (suggesting several fires over last century or so). Near the plot is a large stand of pines killed by southern bark beetle including several in the plot. Cover estimated as if all leaves were present; autumnal leaffall well along.
Plot located ca. 1050 ft northeast on hiking trail #416 from crossing of Fridley Run and ca. 100 ft off the trail on a S60E bearing. Plot marked with orange flag on center, ca. 12 ft southwest of a 28-cm Pinus rigida.
